DÚO JONES & MARURI, (Violoncello-guitarra)
Creado en Madrid en 1990 con motivo de los festivales de música de cámara del ayuntamiento de la capital, el dúo de violoncello y guitarra formado por el británico Michael Kevin Jones y el español Agustín Maruri ha llegado a convertirse en el único dúo estable con esta formación disfrutando de una intensa actividad concertística y discográfica. Aunque mantienen sus carreras como solistas independientes Michael Jones y Agustín Maruri se reunen periodicamente para preparar nuevos programas y nuevos discos asi como realizar jiras de conciertos.
Como dúo han ofrecido conciertos en Europa, America del Norte, America Central y America del Sur, el Caribe, Australia ,Nueva Zelanda, Japón , Corea y Filipinas. Desde 1991 realizan jiras periodicas en los Estados Unidos y Canadá dando recitales en Nueva York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Houston, San Agustin, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebéc, Halifax, actuando en salas como Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hancock Centre, Woodruff Arts Centre, Salle Vincent D’Indy, etc.
Como resultado del trabajo de recuperación e investigación de repertorio original realizado por Agustín Maruri, el dúo ha llevado al disco gran parte de las obras originales escritas para esta combinación desde el Barroco hasta nuestros dias destacando especialmente los compositors europeos del siglo XIX.
Especial mención merece su trabajo sobre repertorio español del XIX , recojido en el disco “The Charm of Spain” realizado como encargo del Metropolitan Museum of Art de la ciudad de Nueva York donde se utilizaron instrumentos originales del Museo.
El dúo es también destinatario de obras nuevas escritas exprofesamente para esta combinación, así, autores como Erik Marchelie, Drew Hemenger, Francesco Telli, Jose Maria Sánchez-Verdú, Pedro Sáenz, Stefano Catalano, Nicholas Marshall, Paul Coles, Delfín Colomé y Satoshi Tanaka han dedicado obras a este dúo.
Especial mención merece su disco dedicado a melodias chinas realizado para la compañia “Maysun” de Taiwán fruto del éxito de este dúo en Asia.
Su trabajo discográfico “Evocaciones de España” está dedicado a música española incluyendo obras de Manuel de Falla, Isaac albeniz, Enrique Granados y Federico Moreno Torroba, incluyendo estrenos mundiales de obras escritas exprofesamente para el dúo por Paul Coles, Delfín Colomé y Satoshi Tanaka.
Recientemente la prestigiosa revista internacional especializada en audio profesional “Sixmoons” les otorgo su “Musicians Award” y premió su album “Original music for cello and guitar” con el “Blue Moon Award”.
Su último trabajo discográfico “Arpegione” recoge en dos CD una recopilación de practicamente toda la obra original para violoncello y guitarra escrita en el siglo XIX incluyendo varios estrenos mundiales de obras desconocidas hasta este momento. Esta grabación se complementa con una anterior del dúo que unida a la mencionada supone la primera grabación mundial de todas las obras conocidas hasta le fecha originales para violoncello y guitarra escritas en el siglo XIX.
La originalidad y versatilidad de este dúo cosecha un éxito permanente entre el público musical de todo el mundo.
THE JONES & MARURI (cello-guitar duo)
Since British cellist Michael Kevin Jones and Spanish guitarist Agustín Maruri decided to experiment in the chamber music field and play some music together in a summer concert series in Madrid in 1990, The Jones&Maruri cello guitar duo has become one of the few established cello guitar ensembles in the world and enjoys a very active concert and recording career. Although they keep their respective solo activities they meet every year to play together some concerts and to prepare new programs and new recordings.
Michael Jones and Agustín Maruri have since played concerts in Europe, North, Central and South America as well as the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand. Their first US tour was in 1991 and included concerts in New York and St. Augustine. Since then they have performed each year in the USA, giving recitals in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C, Atlanta, Toronto Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa at venues such as the Lincoln Centre, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hancock Centre, Woodruff Arts Centre, Teatro Teresa Carreño, Caracas, Salle Vincent D’Indy and at several festivals in Cuba, Argentina, México and throughout South America.
Agustín Maruri has investigated the original historic repertoire for this unusual combination and their discography includes a first world recording of rare compositions from the nineteenth century for cello and guitar, presenting music by Leonhard Von Call, Thomas Matiegka and Friedrich Dotzauer. They have also recorded the original repertoire of the twentieth century for this combination and have inspired living composers to write for them such as Pedro Sáenz, Francesco Telli, Erik Marchelie, Nicholas Marshall, Jose María Sáncez-Verdú, Stefano Catalano, Delfín Colomé and Drew Hemenger.
In 1999 Agustín Maruri started a collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the first of a series of recordings was “The Charm of Spain”; a collection of Spanish romantic melodies from the nineteenth century performing on instruments from the museum’s exclusive collection.
In 2005 they released a new album: “Don Quijote y Dulcinea” , a compilation of original compositions for the dúo including music by Erik Marchelie, Ferdinad Rebay, Hans Maria Anton Hauswirth, Drew Hemenger, Walter Jentsch and Radames Gnattali. Their last recording “Evociones de España” includes spanish music clasics as well as new pieces created for the duo like “Dels Ocells” by Delfín Colomé and “Nocturno de San Idelfonso” by Satoshi Tanaka. Recently the prestigious international digital audio magazine “Sixmoons” award them the “Musicians Award” and prized their album “Original music for cello and guitar” with the “Blue Moon Award”.
One of the characteristics of this singular duo is their devotion to the original repertoire and the creation of new music by outstanding young composers who, attracted by the special sonority and rare beauty of this instrumental combination have written new music for them. This coexistence of original XIX century repertoire and the arise of new works gives the Jones&Maruri duo a wide range and musical diversity in their live and recorded programs.
